British Columbia offers an astounding 27,000 kilometers of coastline alone, not to mention the thousands of lakes and rivers across the province. However, with increasing real estate values and expanding development, it is becoming increasingly difficult for the public to access these waterways.

Boating BC has contributed $20,000 in a new grant and sponsorship program designed to support British Columbia’s boating industry and local communities looking to enhance boating as a recreational and economic driver.

Community organizations were granted funding based on their development of capital infrastructure projects or events and initiatives deemed to increase participation in recreational boating or to help grow the recreational boating industry in BC.

The 2017 Boating BC Grants and Sponsorship recipients are as follows:

  • Salmon Arm Community Association - $2,500 to repair and extend the life of the wharf at Seymour Arm, B.C.
  • Shuswap Association of Rowing + Paddling - $2,500 to purchase 120 personal floatation devices as part of a Canada’s 150th Original Wooden Dragon Boat Festival Celebration.
  • Locarno Sailing Club - $2,500 to purchase a new training dinghy and introduce new people to sailing in English Bay.
  • Georgia Straight Alliance - $2,500 to support the Clean Marine BC program.
  • Variety, the Children’s Charity - $2,500 sponsorship of Boat for Hope events in Vancouver, Kelowna and Victoria.
  • AHOY BC - $2,500 to support an online Facebook and Instagram campaign in partnership with Destinations Canada promoting Boating tourism in BC.
  • Shuswap Lifeboat Society - $1,000 to fund boat launch kiosk offering loaner personal flotation devices.
  • British Columbia Yacht Brokers Association - $2,500 sponsorship of the Victoria Inner Harbour Boat Show.
  • Pacific Salmon Foundation - $1,500 towards the fifth annual fundraising fishing derby on Galiano Island.

Boating BC congratulates all the recipients this year who are committed to helping people enjoy local waters in a safe and enjoyable way. Each one of these organizations improves recreational boating in our province by increasing access to the boating lifestyle, working to educate the key aspects of boating, along with improving boating opportunities in the province.
